I do not know about this tradition

Junior won WMCCC and it did not stop to play in tournaments.
Fritz won WCCC and it did not stop to play in tournaments.

Both programs played in the last wccc.

You are right that part of the commercial did not play in tournaments but they
had to pay more money to play relative to the amatures.
playing in an online tourney at ICC is more easy(you do not have to travel and
you do not have to pay a lot of money) so I expect more commercial to play.
