I would suggest that you look at crafty's source (search.c) to see what I do.

Basically I use R=3 near the root, and R=2 near the tips.  If there is a
queen or more on the board, I do null move, period.  If there is less than a
queen, then I still do null move, but not near the root, so that I can
'out-search' the common zug problems.  If the side on move has no pieces, just
pawns, null-move is disabled for this side...
