I have also been experimenting with R=2 and R=3 mixes.
However, per Crafty, I assume R=2 is actually depth-3, since
depth-1 is normal.

My program (with very limited eval) seems to do better with R=2.

I suspsect that R=3 reduction works better at higher depths only IF you also
have various extensions, besides just in check (again ala Crafty's long list),
perhaps to compensate.

PS No nullmoves if side to move has no major/minors, nor immediately following
and prior null, or of course in check...
