There are other issues to consider rather than raw _floating_point_ power which
is what these claims are based upon. For integer operations, I do not know how a
500mhz G4 will compare to a 700mhz K7 (Athelon).

The first is, thet Fritz 6, and rebel will have to run emulated. Hiarcs has
a very good Mac version that should 'Scream' on a G4.

Second, if you want this machine to program on, consider waiting 6 months for
the second generation machines. The first generation use the same bus
architecture as the G3, so the altivec data bus is 64 bits, not 128 bits wide
with the L2 catch. This was to ensure pin compatiblity with exsisting G3
machines and allow a simple processor swap. The 128 bit bus will allow greater
throughtput and therefore be even faster.

Lastly, the G4 process is currently in short supply and therefore the prices
actually rose (not dropped) on the current G4 machines. They will fall again
when the supply catches up with demand.

Personally, I'd go Mac, but consider waiting. Then again, the chances of me
getting a new machine any time soon are so slim, that the point is moot. I just
limp along with a 266mhz G3. : )))
