I should have figured earlier, your problem is noth with crafty.rc but you are
missing the "xboard" parameter for crafty. It needs it to get into winboard
mode.
So change the end of your winboard.ini file to something like :
/firstChessProgramNames="GNUChess
\"Wcrafty xboard\"
"
and make sure the correct Crafty version is in your winboard directory. Of
course you need to change "wcrafty" to your crafty filename.
About crafty.rc:
mine looks like this
egtb {endgame tabelbases are on}
hash=8M {hashtables}
hashp=2M {pawn hashtables}
ansi=off {don't remember what this is}
ponder=off {no pondering}
log=off {no log files}
exit {stop reading input from this file}
and there are a lot more more options to toy with.
