Shogi is quite like chess, only the pieces keep on coming back and back until you get the king. Obviously, that makes the endgame completely different. If you have a problem with the characters, there is shogi software that uses symbolic pieces instead of kanji. If you want to learn the game it is probably a better idea to start with something like that. You might consider asking at the shogi mailing-list for such programs when/if you want to give the game one more try. Or you can ask me via e-mail if I can find some program that I have used previously. (I don't play shogi at the moment.) My apologies for drifting off-topic. I will post no further on shogi programs.
