I'd also like to add that there are methods of programming where the programmer would need very little knowledge about chess: neural networks and genetic programming. In such methods the computer teaches itself how to play well, and the programmer really has no idea as to why the program makes the choices it does. Currently, the computer power available makes these techniques only of limited use to chess.
