I can't answer for ICC since I don't play there. But at home I play crafty most
of the time. I have commercial programs but prefer the Winboard+crafty
combination most of the time.
As far as strength, the ICC finger notes about computers may lead you to a
different conclusion. Crafty is strong at all time controls. And look at all
the WMCCC events that crafty entered. Did fairly well in all of them. Jakarta
was a shining moment IIRC.
In the KKUP 2, crafty did well at very long time controls.
I believe that crafty is one of the best blitz programs on earth. {if you like
that sort of a thing}
IOW, crafty is no slouch. Crafty does not have all the bells and whistles of
some of the commercial chess programs (but then, how often do you want to ding a
bell or tweet a whistle while playing chess)
My favorite chess program is Crafty (+winboard)
My next favorites (in no particular order):
Arasan, Phalanx, Rebel, Hiarcs, TSCP
Why do people play the programs that they do? You might as well ask why they
cut their hair a certain way or wear the clothes that they do. They do it
because that's what they want to do.
