In the above, there are 2 empty squares on rank 8 at a8 and b8 a black rook on c8 followed by another empty square on d8, followed by a black rook at e8 another empty square at f8 then king on g8 followed by another empty square at h8. So from left to right are ranks 8 - 1. Thanks.
