Maybe the most popular is auto232, for that you will have to ask somebody else. Xboard lets you play two engines on different machines with very simple command-line options, the physical details of the connection are transparent to me. The programs I can play on two machines via Xboard are: crafty, exchess, faile, gnuchess, gromit, olithink and phalanx (there might be more that I have not tried). No special settings for the programs are required. I think Winboard lets you do the same, but you need to enable some non-standard features in Windows. You can ask Tim Mann about the details, he is very friendly. José.
