James,

The issues resolve around non-standard extensions to your language of choice,
and microprocessor specific issues as well.

Chess.h in crafty defines a lot of things that may serve to illustrate the
differences among OS's and microprocessors.

For Example:
I am converting several parts of my program over to bitboards.  Bit placement
within the long long word is dependent on bit order of the microprocessor,
reducing portablility for hardcoded bit masks.
