I'd say Fritz is the name that most american and english people *think* is the
most common and most typical german name. In fact it's fairly uncommon. Just
like people all around think we eat Sauerkraut everyday (well, we don't. Maybe
one or two times a year or so ;-)

My guess is, this all started as a joke. Someone called it Fritz (maybe because
this name is a bit similar to Frans?), they all had a good laugh, and then
thought, why not?

Btw., working as a professional programmer, I use to give one function in all of
my projects a totally stupid name, which doesn't make any sense at all, like
"Winfried" or "Wilhelm" or something like that. Just a small joke, that I've
been doing for many years. One was named "Atomfried", the most stupid name I
have ever heard of. :)
