12.4.99 Charles and all -- Kraut became an insulting term during World War II. Of course, it is shortened from sauerkraut (excuse my spelling). Allied forces called Germans Krauts ... as in most any war, the opponent is reduced to a subhuman level in order to (apparently) better fight him. An interesting sidebar to this is that in America during WWII, sauerkraut was no longer labeled as that on the jar in stores but rather was renamed "Liberty Cabbage." Take care, Kelly Patterson
