Ed,

Go to http://www.rebel.nl/bench.htm for a comparison of recent processors
compared to your system. Remember that the AMD K3 600 Mhz chip is damned fast
and it will be cheaper by 50% this coming April 2000. Of course, by then we
will have chips cooking at over 1000 Mhz.

There is also the matter of which OS to use. I suppose that Windows 2000 will
be bundled with most new machines. You will not be able to run 16bit DOS
programs on it--Win2000 will only run 32 and 64bit programs.

There is a new processor called "Crusoe" that will come out in early 2000 which
will allow you to run programs from the BeOS to Mac to PC on the same machine.
You can check this out on Jan 19, 2000 at http:\\www.transmeta.com

Get at least 64 to 128Megs of RAM and a nice big hard drive of over 20 Gbyte
capacity. Throw in a fast DVD player and a 32 Mbyte Video Card for other more
graphic applications.
