I once read an article about Grand Masters and the way that they looked at the chess board. It was noted that they did not see any more than the average chess player, but the one thing that they did do was spot positions of power. They were able to see positions that were forming power groups that controlled a portion of the chess board and then they counter attacked. After interviewing them, they stated that control of the chess board was the single most important thing, and that included the build up of power points to control various positions on the board. This they concluded, gave them the chance to seek aggressive attacks on the enemy and go for a win! This king of positional planning is one of the major features that are missing from most chess engines, and I suppose that in time someone will figure it out. I have worked on such a algorithm for a little while now, but it is nowhere complete. I think that when chess programmers figure out how to implement this into their programs, it will be all over for human players. Bill
