Some of the more seriously competitive players own a laptop so they can take their program, database, etc with them to tounaments to help analyse and prepare between rounds. They use the programs to help analyse their own and opponents games, and to check any novelties they have invented for tactical mistakes. Some also like to play blitz against their computers occasionally to get unsound sacs out of the system :-) They are smart enough to know that the computer is very good at some things, but can't always be trusted. Of course the database software probably gets an even heavier work out than the chess engine. These top players range from GM down to just below IM. I guess it is the same elsewhere?
