Most of the top Australian players have at least one chess program. Some of the
more seriously competitive players own a laptop so they can take their program,
database, etc with them to tounaments to help analyse and prepare between
rounds. They use the programs to help analyse their own and opponents games, and
to check any novelties they have invented for tactical mistakes. Some also like
to play blitz against their computers occasionally to get unsound sacs out of
the system :-) They are smart enough to know that the computer is very good at
some things, but can't always be trusted.

Of course the database software probably gets an even heavier work out than the
chess engine.

These top players range from GM down to just below IM. I guess it is the same
elsewhere?
