As for the first of your two problems, check for two files in your Chessmaster
folder called "FACES.DAT" and "FACES.IDX". If both of those files are there,
then they may be damaged. If they aren't there (or are possibly damaged), you
can either copy those two files from your Chessmaster CD or (if you aren't
comfortable with that), uninstall and re-install the program.

As for the second problem, the other post's comment was correct, assuming you
are attempting to play a rated game against a GM personality. If you have the
"US" version, just download the 1.0.3 patch from www.chessmaster.com. You can
tell if you have a "US" version if there is a "AT&T Technical Support" menuitem
in the "Help" menu. If that's not there, then you're out of luck.

If you are trying to play against one of the "human" personalities, then I would
think that perhaps OTHER files in your folder are damaged, and would definitely
recommend a re-install.
