As a chess program addict, I can tell you that I highly recommend upgrading to the latest version of every program you can get. But on a more pratical level, I think the 2 very best programs to own right now are these; * Fritz6 - Totally re-written Windows interface, with too many excellent features to recount here. I can tell you that its opening book is around 130 megabyts large. That's alot. If its really well tuned for Fritz6, then its worth having on the Hard disk. * Rebel Century. The best of the best Dos playing programs. It has many fantastic features for serious chess students/analyst, including a few even Fritz6 doesn't have, and the reason I like it so much is the style of the chess playing engine, combined with what I believe is the best Opening book ever created for a chess playing program. (Not sure how big it is though). If I want to research some opening line, then the combination of Chess (Opening), books, great chess playing software & the fine work of Jerone Nooman are all I need. Best of all, with Fritz6, I can now take this book into the Fritz format. (True, maybe I'm a little too 'hooked' on the opening in chess also:))... Larry T.
