I wouldn't be able to explain how it works, but it was originally designed I beleive for network communications related to the military (I'm sure someone will correct me if I'm wrong) and part of the idea is that the network can have parts of it destroyed without having an effect on the whole network. So when one line gets severed, that one area is down, but the rest of the network continues to function, like you said. It works well, and like the Windows gui (and similar OS) this has all evolved into a largely graphical world from what had started out as allot of ascii text and elbow grease. Pete
