Just anecdotal evidence, but can't resist blowing my own horn...
I have played exactly one tournament game with a GM (Simic, Yugoslavia, 2495 at
that time, making him a rather weak GM, I fear).  It was in 1989, I think my
(national) rating was closer to 2000 than to 1900 at that time.  I drew with
Black.
