If you prefer structure and orderly progression, the Tasc instruction programme ($59) is far superior to Chess Mentor (please note that it's still a DOS programme). It begins each lesson with a conventional explanatory narrative and then subjects you to a series of tests. Generally, there are 2 to 3 tests of 10 questions (a position on the board--e.g., mate in two) for each such subject. This testing format, I believe, reinforces the principles taught much better than Chess Mentor. If you wish to reinforce tactical methods you have already learned, Chess Tactics for Beginners and CT-ART 3 from Chess Assistant are excellent.
