Personally, I think a chess set (pieces and board) looks best when the
height of the king is equal to two board squares.  I find this ratio both
aesthetically pleasing and practical:  the pieces aren't so small they
are lost on the board, nor are they so large as to crowd the board.  I
bought a Legend Pioneer ebony set with a 4-inch king.  So naturally, I
ordered a custom Becker board with 2-inch squares.  Fabulous combination!
