In 1970, I played in a 7-round USCF event in Birmingham, and had a provisional rating over 2200. I always felt that was skewed, because I beat a player rated right at 2200, but we played _all_ the time, and I knew what he liked and didn't like, and caught him in an unexpected transposition that led to wild tactics rather than his preferred quiet game. A few months ago I split a 10-game match on ICC with a FM (OldCoach was his handle I think...) My major shortcoming is not playing nearly enough to keep tactically sharp. I don't have a lot of trouble with snap-judgement on positions, because I study that all the time with Crafty. But if you don't play a lot, tactics go quickly. I haven't played any serious chess in maybe 15 years... I do occasionally get caught up in playing a computer to get a feel for what it is doing. I can learn more about it by playing it myself than I can by watching someone else...
