I have been known to play the older gnuchess programs on ICC at blitz and do ok. But I don't really like to play blitz when I am trying to understand what a program is doing... there simply isn't enough time to watch for tactics, study the position, and notice what the program seems to be doing, all at the same time. My wins over programs have been longer games.. and without takeback/analysis windows. Just not fast games... With slow games, you will discover things like the fact that the old Mach III can be rolled into a little ball with a kingside attack if you are just careful in setting it up _before_ you start the attack. Ditto for genius 2/3. And Rebel 7. And versions of Crafty as well.
