Sigma Chess 4.02 has more bells and whistles, MacChess is simpler. Both are free. If they have a PowerPC, then substitute MacChess 5.01 for MacChess 2.5.1. If you want to get some idea of what these programs do, their home pages have screenshots, menu collages and online manuals. The home pages are: (MacChess): http://members.aol.com/macchess/ (Sigma Chess): http://users.cybercity.dk/~bst10651/ If your student has an older Mac (e.g., a Mac Plus) then GNUChess (also on this page) is the program to get. Regarding getting the program into his PC - yes, the Mac will read a PC floppy, but for the program to "survive" on a PC floppy, you probably want to download the .hqx file from the Internet (which is they way they mainly are, anyway), and your student will probably need Stuffit Expander to decompress that. Matters would be simplified if you or they had a friend with a Mac with internet access. Richard A. Fowell (fowell@netcom.com) http://dmoz.org/Games/Board_Games/Chess/Software/Macintosh/
