I have run Chest 3.19 against 3000 mates in about one hour. In a surprising percentage of the cases, a superior result was found. The speed of mate detection is very fast. Chest is the only true mate solver that understands EPD correctly. There is a bug with EPD -- it does not understand the e.p. code at the end of the record. However, Chest does understand this information when run in the Chest language. It is possible that the UNIX version works properly. I had to make some changes for the program to compile under Windows NT. An incredibly versatile tool. Try it -- you'll like it. The Win32 version can be found here: ftp://38.168.214.175/pub/chest/chest319.ZIP The UNIX version can be found here: http://www.drb.insel.de/~heiner/Chess/chest.html
