It's been realiable. From what I've heard, Toshiba seems to be the most reliable, but IBM certainly has the best web site and support. So there are few firm recommendations. However, to save some $$$, you might want to look into a used unit. Make sure you get it from someone you think you can trust, and make sure that you can still get drivers, etc. Don't buys anything but a name brand.
