No.

Yes. This is also sometimes called "distributed memory", which is what I called
it in my inital posting. The IBM SP2 is similar.

Hardware money and algorithm scaling are the limits. There is no one answer.

I can use any building block I like. I usually use single-CPU building bocks
because they make sense for the problems involved. That Compaq machine only has
16 PCI busses, for example, and has a high per-cpu cost.
