Hi, this may be off-topic, but a friend of mine who is "trying" to write a programme asked me this: Statistically, which square at the 8th rank (or 1st rank, depending on colour) is most likely for a pawn to queen. My request is : can somebody wih a huge database of games, seek out games where there is /are pawns being promoted/queened and give the breakdown of the % distribituion of the square where the queening/promotion took place? My gut feel is that f8 and g8 squares (or f1 and g1, depending on colour) have the highest % although hanging pawns most often occurred at the c and d files. Better still, of such games, a further breakdown by % distribition by ECO and name of computer program which lost the game would even be better. Basically, my friend is toying with the idea of identifying the most commonly queened square and pushing a pawn there, by among (many) other things, adopting an opening most likely to achieve that and identitying if the opponent (a particular chess program) makes it easy to do that. My English is not very good, I hope I make sense. Thanks and Merry Christmas.
