One of the most important tablebases is KPP vs. KP, but to use it correctly, Fritz 6 must also have access to the KQP vs. KP tablebase. Without the KQP vs. KP tablebase, Fritz 6 usually will not promote the pawn to win the KPP vs. KP ending. It will just move its pieces around when the winning pawn reaches the 7th rank. I assumed Chessbase did not include the KQP vs. KP tablebase on the Fritz 6 CD (or Hiarcs 7.32) because of space considerations, and that’s OK. After all, they also offer the new Endgame Turbo CD which should fix the problem, right? Wrong!!! I just installed the tablebases from the Endgame Turbo CD, and guess what? No KQP vs KP tablebase. I wish I knew that before I ordered it, but the list of tablebases it contained was not available at the time. I just assumed it had the KQP vs KP tablebase. So now I have 2.6 gig of tablebases installed on my hard drive, and Fritz 6 still cannot play the KPP vs. KP correctly. It would be helpful if Chessbase could address this limitation programmatically in Fritz 6 and the other commercial engines in the same way that Bob Hyatt did it in Crafty. Right now, if I want to study the KPP vs. KP ending, I use the Crafty engine because it is the only one that will promote the pawn without the KQP vs. KP tablebase. Len
