Olaf Jenkner checked whether his marvellous Gustav could be modified to solve it
(after he himself had succeeded). Possible, but takes an inordinate amount of
time.

Sorry to cause you pain with the problem. I have received so many emails that I
am paying for what I did. But many are so clever (see earlier posting) and so
nice that I think it's definitely worth it. Here's one that arrived yesterday
(excerpts, with references to his correct solution obliterated):

"All of Slashdot went nuts thanks to you. I and many others lost all
productivity until someone managed to solve it. ... I had determined that we
needed a queen using a forward attack... But I NEVER, NEVER through of...
Brilliant sir, Brilliant. Thanks for a reminder of why I used to play."

I currently have 46 pages of letters.
