Some comments on the first game of the Russek-Rebel Century match: 1. Russek failed to obtain any initiative or advantage from the opening. While the opening may not be to blame for the loss, it certainly didn't help create good chances for Russek. 2. Russek made mistakes and the computer capitalized. It sounds kind of trivial and simplistic, but I expected much more of a fight from an IM. Rebel Century was ruthless in exploiting its advantages. 3. One of the things that GM Baburin said about his game vs. Rebel Century was that he was going to try to play the same style of chess that he normally plays. And I think he did OK, even though he only got a draw. Here, I think Russek did not trust himself and did not play his regular opening repertoire. This led to unfamiliar positions to Russek, where he did not know how to formulate a plan. 4. I certainly hope that Russek goes back to his regular method of playing. And even if he loses, at least it will be in his own terms, rather than playing "anti-computer" chess. Baldo.
