It sounds like an interesting contest, but I perfer longer time control (the
longer the better).

Anyway, will we be surprised if a single GM of ELO 2500 wins 4-3 over a GM of
2590?

I think you are just seeing the normal fluxuations that are to be expected.

Hiarcs on a K6-350 is no slouch.  I think (also) that Rebel is designed as an
"anti-human" weapon as is Crafty.  So Rebel's greatest strength is slightly
orthogonal to computer play (but still very high).  In any case, after 100 games
we will have some idea which program is really stronger.  After 7 games, there
is no way to know.

You may be overestimating the added power of higher MHz.  I'd be pretty
surprised if it added more than 50 ELO.
