One must differentiate between selective extensions and selective pruning.
Selective extensions preserve the assurance depth of an alpha-beta search,
pruning OTOH reduces the assurance depth of an alpha-beta search thus making it
a bit unsafe. Assurance depth is the depth a selective search is producing the
same result as a mini-max and thus also an alpha-beta search. These are som of
the more important(/crappy) definitions whe comparing search algorithms.
