Engine tuning: Fact or fiction?

Nimzo 7.32, Shredder4 and Rebel Century now offer a huge number of
possibilities to change engine parameters.
The user can try to create a special parameter pattern for a distinct aim,
e.g. in long time analysis a change of selectivity might be appropriate.

To invent a better engine with a special style seems to be a very
challenging task. Perhaps mostly impossible, even if Schroeder promises a
prize for the best engine tuner of Rebel century.
But for chessmaster 6000 special successful settings were published.

The aim to find a better style against a special opponent seems to me
the easier, more promising, task.
Elder Nimzo-versions had special settings against Fritz, Hiarcs or Junior.
And tests confirmed, that there were slightly better results.

Has someone already tried to create a better Nimzo, Shredder or Rebel against
e.g. Fritz, Junior or Hiarcs. How were the results?

What is the estimation of experts? Can engine-tuning be successful?
