It is primarily used as a defense against someone taking the program out of book early, and then finding a line to beat it. This facility prevents crafty from playing the same line over and over, losing every game. But that is all that it does. book.bin _never_ changes in size. book.lrn does, but that is an export file that crafty doesn't use, as it modifies book.bin when it learns to avoid a book line. This can make it play better, but again is primarily a defense to repeated book losses. But as it loses, it learns opening lines that it can't play well, so from that angle, it does 'get better'. But don't expect miracles.. I am not sure how CDB calls crafty, but it is certainly possible that the position learning is active if crafty thinks it is doing a normal search.
