Tablebases say it is +M21.

Yes, that is true, which means that your study was correct, as far as the key
move is concerned.

However, the best defence is not 1... Ke7, after which 2. Kg6 is +M16 (... Ke6
[Kf8? 3. Nd5 +M12] 3. Nf5 and 4. Ng7). The main line is as follows:

 1. Ne3      Bc3
 2. Kg6      Kd7
 3. Nd5      Bd4
 4. Kf7      Bh8
 5. Nf6+     Kd6
 6. Nh5      Kd5
 7. Ng7      Ke5
 8. Kg8      Kf6
 9. Kxh8 1-0
