A Would you play chess if you had been lying in a closet for 18 months? :) About mainenance: I have had a (SciSys) Chess Partner 2000, which I bought in 1982, where unfortunately one of such flatcables connecting the board with the processor got hurt. Inside the cabinet, without opening it. Strange. Another problem was wear and tear of the individual fields; as the playing field was pressed under a plastic 8x8 grid on the edges it developed cracks. Now I have a Scisys Kasparov Turbo S-24K from 1986 still in excellent condition. Keep the batteries in, but sometimes taking them out and rearrange them. No matter you erase your library, as we all have PC's and far better database programs. But you could then store 4000 moves in it, and use it to program your opening library. In a nifty artifical leather pouch, with the manual covered in a plastic file map, preventing is from becoming yellow and crackling. I have another small one, bought for a mere $25, someting called Tiger (!!) very simple and easy to beat. Just for (my) fun. So basically it is: handle gently, play gently (no smashing pieces around) keep those belongings well kept away, and check and clean up from time to time. Keep humidity mediate to prevent from drying, and not to high to prevent corrosion of internal components. Treat it, don't beat it. Jeroen ;-}
