There's a very long tedious explanation of epd (which of coarse is related to
FEN which is related to a format used in the 19th century in newspapers) if you
look in the PGN standard, unfortunaly my link to the PGN standard text file no
longer works!  I could send you a copy of the text files because I did download
it a long time ago, but to honest, it's pretty far from being interesting
reading, more of a reference thing.  I don't know if anyone give a _clear_
explanation of epd, I bet someone does, I never looked at it that close, I just
know some basic fen stuff.
