While Tim's HTML generator is more flexible than those which embed the square colors in the GIFs, I wonder if the second approach produces diagrams which load and redraw faster than Tim's approach, or vice versa. Also - do the "width" and "height" instructions help overall, or not? Tim's HTML for an empty black square at the left edge of board: <tr><td bgcolor="#009966"><img src="/diagram/es.gif" border=0 alt="::" width="34" height="35"> Dregis HTML for an empty black square at the left edge of board: Source from http://www.ex.ac.uk/~dregis/DR/Canon/canon499.html: <IMG ALT="+" SRC=../../GIFs/mt_d.gif> The Dregis HTML is much more compact, so it will load faster, and take up less disk space on a site with lots of diagrams (like the Dregis site or CCC). Tim's code has fewer GIFs to load, and the "width" and "height" tags are supposed to help the browser lay out the page (and may be more compatible, though Dregis prides himself on making pages "best viewed with any browser"). So - which is more efficient, overall? Richard A. Fowell (fowell@netcom.com) http://dmoz.org/Games/Board_Games/Chess/Software/Macintosh/
