But sometimes advancement means "capable of higher clock speeds" and not necessarily "more efficient." The Athlon can be cranked past 1GHz pretty easily, whereas the K6 maxes out at around 600MHz. However, the Athlon also has twice as much L1 cache and a better L2 cache. So if your chess programs bang on a lot of memory, the Athlon will be much faster than the K6 at any clock speed. That's what makes your question tricky... (BTW, the Athlon's FPU is far superior to the Intel FPU. That might also affect your decision...) -Tom
