In my program, it is possible for a null move to send me straight to the
quiescence search; the check extension is never "activated." If my program is in
check in the quiescence search, it will search all legal moves, so it's like
another ply of full width.

If you're talking about the killer move heuristic, that should only be done for
non-captures.
