I see extensions as takin a deeper look to some lines analyzed by the machine, because the nominal search depth is likely to miss the outcome of it. So i would extend a move only if there is a chance for a horizon effect if not applying the extension. The most obvious extensions: extend when in check, extend when mate threat. Other possible extensions: extend when passed pawn races are happening. Vincent
