I think that the members have become more liberal in the last 1 1/2 years in their view of what is acceptable as far as postings. If you look at the current poll (which is growing dust by now) and the poll held back then, you will see that the our group has become somewhat more tolerant of off-topic posts. However, I think that we need to make a distinction between off-topic posts that are designed to bring us together as a community and those that are created in order to create turmoil, anger, and ill-will. Our current moderators have done an excellent job, in my opinion, of being tolerant and giving the benefit of the doubt to posts that appear, in the surface, at least, to be of the latter type. Having been privy to moderator emails, I know that they have spent many hours over the last 6 months discussing posts, biting their tongues, and making every possible attempt to settle the crowd without deleting posts or members. When they felt they had no alternative, then action was taken, but it did not happen very often, and no impartial person could ever say that they did not try to do what they thought best for CCC. I think if we discuss where CCC is going, moderation-wise, we need to talk about how we are going to weed out the off-topic posts that are meant to be destructive and demeaning and hurtful from the ones that make visiting the CCC a joy. Perhaps a perfect example would the attitude that Fernando brings to this group. He is often on-topic, sometimes off-topic but ALWAYS concerned with the feelings of others and the welfare of the CCC. There are others who are off-topic for other, more selfish, more devious reasons. Whoever runs for the open Moderator positions in the next several weeks should consider how he (or she) will handle the two types of off-topic posts that I have described above. It is not an easy job, and the pay stinks:-)) Steve (ICD/Your Move) P.S. My apologies to the members who do not like to see issues other that computer chess discussed here. But elections are coming up in the near future, and these types of issues should be discused now that that members are deciding whether to run for Moderator, and, if not, for whom they should vote.
