So can my father still play chess, though somewhat different from how
he played it 28 years ago. That isn't to say that some players maybe
get better with age, but these are players that still play regularly.
But in Fischer's case we have the Spassky match from Yugoslavia as one
example. Fischer never lost it over the board simply because he refused
to defend it.

Karpov was clearly the best player in the world for 10 years, his record
during that time in both tourney and match play was one of the best if not
the best in history. He won the title legitamately by winning the qualifying
matches and therefore earned the right to play Fischer in 1975, it was
Fisher's refusal to play that resulted in Karpov being declared World Champion.
Karpov IMHO never got the credit he deserved. Sadly now he is out of the top
10 yet still a truly great player.
