I agree, and Kasparov would have an opportunity to "prove" his claims about IBMs
cheating, at least in the eyes of many of the public. I don't know if Kasparov
could afford to dismiss such a challenge. My feeling is that, having failed to
persuade Kasparov to go for a match now, Hsu could virtually force a match by
going ahead and building the machine. I really don't see it as a big risk.
Kasparov planted the seed of doubt that IBM won fairly, and the public would be
just as interested now to see the clash of man vs. machine as they were before.
Assuming Hsu really can build a super machine on his own, do you really think
there is a big risk of him not recouping the money? I don't. And even if
Kasparov didn't agree to a match initially, you could get plenty of sponsor
money to see it play. The pressure would get to Kasparov, and if it openly
challenged all comers and crushed them all, he would really have no choice but
to go for it. Like I said, I would be willing to invest in the project if Hsu
doesn't want to risk it alone.
