It is not really a good analogy since the output from humans and machines is the same. IE, if you don't know who is playing you don't know if he is human or PC but if you see them running you know if it is a motorbike. The issue is complex, in my opinion. Chess has two different sources of beauty: a) the competitive side (who is going to win, regardless of their level of skill, that is what makes lesser tournaments interesting) b) The artistic and intellectual side (I won't make much of a difference between them) At this moment the competitive side favours the man-machine matches. It is demonstrated by the interest generated by DB matches. Probably some years in the future it won't be this way, but right now it is. The artistic and intellectual side will always favour the better player, regardless of whether he is man or machine. By the way, once the machines are way better than human, interest on human chess may diminish since the artistic and intellectual satisfaction they can provide won't be able to match the machine's chess, and we will be left only with the competition satisfaction from human chess. The correct thing to do is probably to follow the wishes of the audience. What do they want? This is because the audience provide the money, and professional chess players are there to get the money. This may be sad but if this is untrue, why hasn't Kasparov played Shirov?
