Subject: Board on fire

Author: Sune Larsson

Date: 08:07:06 01/16/00

Following position was reached in a 60' game between:

White: NN (strong program)
Black: Nimzo732 (stronger program)

White has just played 29.Ra1. History was QG - Tarraschstuff.

[D]6k1/4bpp1/1q2b2p/1p1p4/1Pn2B2/2Q1PP1P/r1N1B1P1/R5K1 b - - 0 1

The tempting 29.-Bf6 was refused due to Q-sac 30.Qxf6 gxf6 31.Rxa2 with
good comp for white.

But... 29.-d4!! sets the board in flames! Many programs surely find this
move but few know the ways to create this position - giving black the
possibilities. Just look at the V-shaped energy fields of the black bishops!
Revealed in full strength by this move 29.-d4.

Game continued: 30.Nxd4 Bxb4 31.Qc1 Bd2 32.Qb1 Bxe3+ 33.Bxe3 Nxe3
                34.Rxa2 Bxa2 35.Qxa2 Qxd4 with transformation into a
totally won endgame. (36.Bxb5 Ng4+ is rapid suicide)

[D]6k1/5pp1/7p/1p6/3q4/4nP1P/Q3B1P1/6K1 w - - 0 1

Result was 0-1 in move 53. Just these Sunday things that make you feel happy...
Nimzo732 is an interesting program with lotsa parameters to play with.
