Subject: New harddrive, partitions, tablebases & Linux

I'm planning to go out and get a new harddrive for my computer today or tuesday,
I expect to get a Western Digital 20.? GB drive.

With the Windows 95 that I have now I hear that I'll be restricted to 2 GB
partitions. So my plan is to break it down into 2 GB sections and maybe a large
section at the end.

What I'm expecting to do at the moment is to move all the Chess programs to
drive D, then drives E & F will be for tablebases (that I never had room for
before!) Then G would just be a copy of C for backups. & H etc. ?

But I have a question about Linux since I'll have some room for it now, will it
be possible to boot into Linux from that far back in the drive or is there a
restriction to that and maybe I should be moving Linux to drive E or F? And can
Linux handle large partitions? I've noticed that the instructions that I looked
at a couple of years back by now recommended what I though was an exceesive
amount of partioning in the Linux partioned area of the harddrive, is this
really needed or is it some sort of paranoia on the part of the authors of those
instrutions?

Also, when I download tablebases through Windows 95, I'm assuming that they are
not altered at all by way of the operating system that I use to download them.
Is this true? Will I be able to use these tablebases when I eventually manage
to get Linux & Xwindows up and running with the Xboard Chess programs?

Thanks

Pete
