I have been experimenting with Century personalities myself a lot (though I did not participate in the contest), and I have found that those which perform best in the test suites I threw at them usually played very poorly in actual games. In most cases (Q3 is a good example, I had several personalities very similar to this one) they favour sacrifices a lot (esp. when "Attractiveness" is set high), which is very good for most test positions, but they also tend to sacrifice just about anything in a game, e.g. they give away a knight for a pawn without any reason and end up losing. It just goes to show that optimizing for test suites does not yield a really strong program. :) (Junior is a good example for the opposite; performs much worse on most test suites than other top commercials, yet is one of the strongest players around.) --- Shep
